Look and Make

Art programmes at the Ulster Museum engage pupils through conversation, close-looking and making. They provide a shared creative learning experience that is memorable and meaningful, delivered by an experienced team, who have in-depth subject knowledge and a passion for making art accessible to all. Each 60-minute workshop is delivered in two parts. Look - taking time in the gallery to focus and discuss what you see. Make - trying out some new creative techniques to make your own artwork inspired by what you’ve seen. Choose a workshop theme from one of the options available.

From Morocco to Mayo: Irish Landscape Painting

Look: This session explores how Irish artists have painted landscapes from County Mayo to Morocco. Children will look at paintings by Sir John Lavery, Roderic O’Conor and Paul Henry and learn how the visual elements can be used to describe different places, weather, seasons and times of day. Make: We will make landscapes using watercolour pencils.

Beautiful Blue and White

Look: The Ulster Museum’s display of Chinese ceramics is one of the highlights of our applied art collection. These objects tell stories of empires and dynasties, the Silk Road, cultural exchange, technology and materials. We will explore ways in which they are designed and what was considered beautiful at different times and in different cultures. We will also look at how form and decoration work together in objects. Make: We will make multi-layered blue and white prints using patterns and motifs from the blue and white china on display in the gallery.

Portraits and Personalities

Look: In this workshop we will look at some of the many different ways artists have made portraits. Children will explore how people wish to present themselves and how they are seen by others. We will also talk about style, technique, the visual elements and composition. Between November 2022 - January 2023, this workshop will focus on the work the work of the artist Francisco Goya, celebrating the loan of his striking portrait of Doña Antonia Zárate, from the National Gallery of Ireland (see page 17). Make: We will make portraits or puppets using collage.
